Classroom Management & Design Ideas for a Kindergarten or 1st Grade Classroom

Hi and welcome to my blog. This blog is intended as a class exercise for EDM 510.

I have never taught in a classroom before, so when I finish with my Alternative Masters degree I will be looking forward to becoming a kindergarten or 1st Grade teacher. I would like to hear some of your ideas on classroom management techniques and classroom environment designs.
I just want some ideas of how a first time teacher will go about setting up her classroom and managing it. Like for example, what are the essentials or "must haves" things or items for every first time teacher?

  1. Jamie,
Organization is crucial to effective teaching and classroom mangement. When you are organized, it helps minimize behavior problems, etc. Also, a reading nook/classroom library is a must have! Bean bags, comfy seating, and lamps make this area feel extra inviting to the students.

  2. Hey Jamie! You are so brave to go into that young of a classroom. I spent some time tutoring reading in a first grade class and I found the behavioral issues due to lack of adequate classroom management very disconcerting. You will need to gain control fast! Along with Sarah's suggestion to create a comfortable learning environment, I would also suggest identifying the so-called "problem children" immediately. That way, you can set up seating arrangements where you don't have two chatty Cathy's or two dancy pants kids sitting together causing constant distractions.
